Whether you’re a tourist thinking about traveling to Berlin or if you have a passing interest in some of the most famous destinations in the world then you have come to the right place! Germany’s capital city, Berlin has a history and it is home to some of the world famous landmarks that attract more than a million people every year. In this post I’d like to share several well-known places in the capital of Germany, Berlin, and some stories related to them.
1. Brandenburg Gate
Perhaps, the most famous landmark in Berlin is the Brandenburg Gate. The Tower is a unifying structure in Germany and is a major historical attraction. The neoclassical gate was constructed at the end of the 18th century and welcomes visitors onto the Unter den Linden boulevard and the Tiergarten park. It has seen many historic events take place and has thus adopted a classic image of the city of Berlin and the country at large.
2. Reichstag Building
Another historical building worth visting is the Reichstag Building. It is also the home for the German parliament or Bundestag and exemplifies both, the old and the new architecture. The major attraction of the building is a roofless glass dome which afford considerable view of the Berlin city. One can even approach the dome and listen to details and working of the German Parliament.
3. Berlin Wall
It would be injustice to visit Berlin and not get a feel of what was left of the Berlin Wall. This infamous structure spiked the city in two halves: East and West Berlin during the freezing period of the Cold war. Today the Berlin Wall acts as a memorial for history of Berlin and the unification of Germany. The walking tour also takes visitors to the East Side Gallery where portions of the wall were turned into murals that painted in various bright colors.
4. Checkpoint Charlie
Checkpoint Charlie is the best-known border between East and west Berlin during the cold war period. It was used as a sign of the divided city and as a major interest where the conflict between two big cultures, the East and the West was prominent. Now one can visit the site and get acquainted with the history of the checkpoint in the Museum situated close to it.
5. Museum Island
Said to be a part of the Spree River, Museum Island is a policy of cultural heritage and embraces five globally acclaimed museums. Culture vultures will not be disappointed visiting the Pergamon Museum, Neues, Altes Museum, Bode and the Alte Nationalgalerie. Some of them do relate to history: as with artefacts from the ancient Egyptians, there are treasures from Museum Island, lost, perhaps to the classical realm.
6. Charlottenburg Palace
Charlottenburg Palace is one of key Baroque and Rococo ensembles as well as the biggest palace in Berlin. The stunning building is believed to have been put up in the 17th century and was used as a residence by the earlier royal family of Prussia. The visitors can now even view the interior of the palace, take a walk in the palace garden and even have a glimpse of royal Berlin.
7. Berlin Cathedral
The attractive building is far from saying it is Berlin’s Berliner Dom of a Protestant cathedral. It is a grand building with a dome and it have great architecture, making it a famous tourist attraction center. Tourists are allowed to go inside the church, go to the top of the dome to watch the amazing view together with the locals who come to watch concerts and events held in this enclosed church .

The towers of Berlin tell the story of this historic city and its traditions are rooted in its architecture. The attractions are more or less relevant to history, art and architecture enthusiasts, and overall after seeing these places one feels more culturally enriched.
